Cairo, NE
“Pronounced ‘Care-oh’”
Established in 1886, legend says that a survey engineer exclaimed, “It looks just like a desert and should be called Cairo”, referring to its counterpart in Egypt. The company clerk followed through with the theme of naming the streets appropriately: Egypt, Berber, Thebe, Nubia, Medina, Suez, Said, Mecca, and Nile.
A year after being established, Cairo had a thriving main street and 200 citizens. Now, 118 years later, Cairo’s population is 790 citizens. Look for our new Welcome Camel on North Hwy 11, donated by Mr. Eddie Baach.
