Common Questions about the Junk Jaunt
Many common questions often asked about the JUNK JAUNT® can be divided into the categories below. If you have other questions feel free to use the form on the contact us page to have someone answer them specifically.
'Common Q&A' for the JUNK JAUNT®
What the Heck is a JUNK JAUNT®?
The JUNK JAUNT® is the largest garage sale in the state of Nebraska. Sometimes antiquers and garage sale buffs are lovingly referred to as ’Junkers’, thus the name. It is 3 days of city-wide garage, yard & bake sales with “treasures” of just about every type and description. Along the way, in unexpected places, there will also be fun & unique things to SEE & DO (a chalk mine, 1870‘s frontier fort, wagon rides, karaoke and museums).
You will also find food courts and plenty of laughs.
What is Nebraska's 'JUNK JAUNT®'?
Garage Sale regulars call themselves "Junkers" and a "Jaunt" is a sprint or short run. Thus, you could say it is 'running for the junk'.
Nebraska's JUNK JAUNT® is nearly 500 miles of garage sales, collectibles, antiques, vintage, gastric delights and just plain fun.
It began in 2004 with about 75 vendors and 1,000 shoppers. In 2011 and 2012, license plate surveys and guest books told us that 20,000 people attended from 34 states (including Hawaii), several Canadians provinces and even a few foreign visitors. Some shoppers have been to every JUNK JAUNT®, for others it is their very first one.
If you wish to be a Registered Vendor, we welcome you, regardless of where you live; however, you must set up your sale within the JUNK JAUNT® area.
Most 'Junkers' tell us that they could never have a successful buying trip without the JUNK JAUNT® Shopper Guide.
We find that people are inventive in their reasons for shopping. Some use the JUNK JAUNT® as a Mother & Daughter weekend, Father & Son, Sisters' outings or fun excursions during a Family Reunion. Some use it as a celebration for having "maintained weight loss", while other groups had a contest to see who could get the best buy of the day or who had made the ugliest purchase of the day. One Canadian wife requested that her 40th Wedding Anniversary gift be a trip to Nebraska for the JUNK JAUNT®.
As it says in our MOTTO: "You are limited only by your imagination and the law".
What is the weather like?
We don't want this to sound like a cliche', but as the saying goes, "in Nebraska wait 5 minutes and the weather will change." You can use your smart phone to check weather conditions.
The average high temperatures in Central Nebraska can range from the low 70's to the mid 80's, while the low temperatures can range from the low 40's to the mid 50's. All this said, you should plan on bringing a jacket, possibly something rain repellent. There have been some past weekend where there have been days where there have been some moisture.
Remember that you'll be traversing rural roads, not all are paved, and when the weather is wet, be prepared to walk through "moist" or even muddy conditions. You've been cautioned, don't wear your favorite shoes, or something that you would not want to get wet or dirty. This is farm country, we're just sayin'.
Can I find lodging?
The JUNK JAUNT® area has a variety of accommodations, most at very reasonable prices, Motels, Bed & Breakfast, Guest Houses and Campgrounds.
A listing of lodging & campground facilities who support the JUNK JAUNT® can be found by visiting the Lodging page.
How do I know if a sale is Registered with the JUNK JAUNT®?
YOU WILL QUICKLY BE ABLE TO TELL THE REGISTERED VENDORS FROM THE OTHERS .......
- ALL REGISTERED VENDORS (SALES SITES) WILL BE LISTED IN THE SHOPPER GUIDE.
- ALL REGISTERED VENDORS RECEIVE IDENTICAL, OFFICIAL, pre-printed, JUNK JAUNT® VENDOR SIGNS TO HELP DIRECT YOU TO THEIR SALE.
All official Vendor Signs WILL:
- Be the same BRIGHT FLORESCENT COLOR (colors change each year).
- Have a large, Professionally PRE-PRINTED design on one side of the sign.
- Have a space on the sign for the Vendor's Number and/or directional arrow or distance to the sale site.
Of course, there are always a number of NON-registered garage sales who put up signs of the same color in an effort to fool the public, but they will not have the "pre-printed" picture on them.
If you enjoy Nebraska's Junk Jaunt® we trust that you will make a conscious effort to patronize only Registered Vendors. These are the people who make the Junk Jaunt® possible.
Each vendor is assigned a number or letter of the alphabet. The JUNK JAUNT® Shopper Guide listings will give the Vendor's number, address of sale, hours of sale and 15-30 words stating the items offered for sale.
All registered vendors and businesses are provided with brightly colored, commercially pre-printed signs to place on or near their sale. Vendors are asked to write their vendor number or letter on these signs along with directional arrows or information to help shopper find their sale.

Why should I advertise my business?
THERE ARE MANY REASONS TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS TO 'JUNK JAUNTERS' ---
- Many of the "junkers" save their Shopper Guide book until the new one is printed, "Just in Case I need it".
- A number of businesses tell us that folks stop at other times of the year because they didn't have time to stop during the JUNK JAUNT®.
- Each year, calls are received after the JUNK JAUNT® is over, looking for a specific business or vendor/sale.
- Many times we cannot provide the requested information, because the business or sale is not advertised in the Shopper Guide.
Ask yourself....... "When I travel, what type of services do I need? What style of business do I find interesting?
- Unusual restaurants or snack shops. People love small town businesses instead of Big Box stores.
- Places to sleep.
- A place to park the camper or RV.
- Gasoline or propane.
- The nearest ATM.
- Somewhere to fix that flat tire or get your auto up and running again.
- Someplace that sells or rents trailers to take home your purchases.
- Storage Units, in case they purchase more than they can take home.
- Medical emergencies.
- A small town variety store, a movie theatre, a unique town park or statue display.
- Historical sites of interest.
- An unusual craft or manufacturing business.
- Antique Shops or Thrift stores where shoppers can stop enroute to the JUNK JAUNT® or on the trip home.
Remember our motto.... "You are limited only by your imagination and the law".
'Common Shopping Tips' Questions
What should I bring with me?
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF THINGS THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING WITH YOU.
- CASH -- Most garage sales and mobile food vendors will not accept checks nor are they set up to take credit cards.
- A SUN HAT and JACKET OR COAT -- Nebraska weather in late September is rather unpredictable. It can be beautiful fall weather, or is can be chilly (50 deg.), windy, rainy, or all of the above in one weekend.
- YOUR PILLOW and a SLEEPING BAG --- This is said in jest, however, if you plan to stay overnight and do not have reservations, you may find yourself scrambling for a place to sleep.
- YOUR SENSE OF ADVENTURE -- Come prepared to to have fun and make new friends in unexpected places.
- And above all, PLEASE BRING YOUR BRAIN! Your DRIVING BRAIN that is. Nobody has been seriously hurt YET, but a number of narrow misses.
Examples . . . . . . . . . .
- Drivers suddenly stop their car and the car following could not stop in time.
- Drivers are so preoccupied with getting to the next sale they forget to look.... and turn in front of oncoming traffic.
- Drivers parking on the shoulder of the highway (illegal parking), fling open their car door and step out in front of moving traffic.
REMEMBER: The people with the sirens, badges and traffic ticket books are also on the highways during JUNK JAUNT®, trying to keep you safe. Do not let one careless moment spoil your JUNK JAUNT® experience.
The "Burma-Shave" ditties scattered throughout the Shopper Guide are not just for your entertainment, they carry a Safety Message as well!
Is NEBRASKA'S JUNK JAUNT® the same dates every year?
Nebraska's JUNK JAUNT® is always held the last FULL weekend in September ... the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of September.
The 22nd Annual Junk Jaunt dates are Friday, September 26 - Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Can I hit all the sales in three days?
Probably not! With over 500 Registered Vendors it is a remote impossibility that one can visit all the sales in 3 days. One would need a very quick "shopping eye" or the need to exceed the speed limit. Exceeding the speed limit is not advised!
To help you visit the sales that are of the most interest to you, we provide a JUNK JAUNT® Shopper Guide
This 120-140 page guide will help you pick and choose your route according to the merchandise offered and the time you have to shop. You can shop for an hour, half a day, all day or two or three days.
What hours are the Sales Vendors open?
Vendors are encouraged to be open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm or later, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, this is not always the case. The hours of each sale are listed in the JUNK JAUNT® Shopper Guide.
How long will it take in each town?
That is anyone's guess. We have towns with 6-10 sales while others have 25-30 sales, and a couple with over 100 vendor locations. Some people shop faster that others. You set your own shopping pace. Don't rule out the "small villages" as they sometimes have more vendors than the larger towns.
Where does it start and stop?
There is no designated starting point or stopping point. All of the towns organize 3 days of sales and fun. It is designed so, no matter what direction you are coming from, the first town you hit can be your starting point. You customize your own route according to the time you have. Here again, the JUNK JAUNT® Shopper Guide can be very valuable if you are shopping for a particular type of merchandise, trying to cover the most distance, or have a limited amount of time.
How many sales will there be?
Each of the past 3 years, we have had between 400 & 500 vendors, scattered throughout 35-40 towns.
How many towns are in the JUNK JAUNT®?
Each year there are about 35 villages and towns that are part of Nebraska's JUNK JAUNT®. About 20 towns are located on the actual Byway 'loop' while the others are located on both the west & east sides of the loop and in the center of the 'loop'. Each JUNK JAUNT® town organizes itself so sales and events can be as unique as is the town itself.
Where is the JUNK JAUNT® held?
Nebraska's JUNK JAUNT® is located in north-central Nebraska. The JUNK JAUNT® route forms a 'loop', much like the Support our Troops ribbon or the Breast Cancer ribbon. One end of this loop begins in Wood River, located about 30 miles west of Grand Island, NE and just north of Interstate 80 highway. From Wood River it follows the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway (Hwy 11) north to Burwell, NE where it changes to Hwy. 91 west. It follows Hwy. 91 west to its' beginning at the small village of Dunning, NE.
Dunning is the top of the JUNK JAUNT®™'loop' and where the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway joins the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway (Hwy 2) heading south and east. The other end of the 'loop' stops in Grand Island, Nebraska.
